Phrasal verb é a dupla formada por um verbo e uma partícula (up, out, off, on, back, down...), que juntos ganham um sentido próprio. Give é dar, e give up é desistir. Find é achar, e find out é descobrir. Run é correr, e run out of é ficar sem: We ran out of coffee (acabou o café).
A estrutura é sempre verbo + partícula, às vezes com uma preposição no fim (look forward to, get along with). O sentido pode ser de três tipos:
- Literal, fácil de deduzir: come in (entrar), sit down (sentar), go back (voltar).
- Figurado, impossível de adivinhar pelas partes: give up (desistir), turn down (recusar), put off (adiar).
- Vários ao mesmo tempo: pick up é pegar do chão, buscar alguém, atender o telefone e até aprender de ouvido (I picked up some Spanish in Chile).
O atalho do brasileiro: o verbo formal parece português
| Formal | Na conversa | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| postpone (adiar) | put off | Let's put off the meeting until Monday. |
| cancel (cancelar) | call off | They called off the game. |
| discover (descobrir) | find out | I found out the truth. |
| continue (continuar) | go on | Sorry, go on. |
| tolerate (tolerar) | put up with | I can't put up with the noise. |
| return (retornar) | come back | When are you coming back? |
| register (inscrever-se) | sign up | I signed up for a yoga class. |
| investigate (investigar) | look into | We're looking into the problem. |
| reduce (reduzir) | cut down on | I'm cutting down on sugar. |
